The other half of the job is what is under the tile. A lot of the older property around Bolehall and Glascote has suspended timber floors, and floorboards flex — tile straight onto them and the grout lines crack out within a winter. They want overboarding or a decoupling matting first, which is an extra half day and the difference between a floor that lasts and one that does not. On the newer estates the problem reverses: the walls are plasterboard and perfectly flat, but they will not carry heavy natural stone without proper fixing. We check what we are tiling onto before we quote, so the price you get is the price it costs.
